Reading the Timeline

Each horizontal band is a swimlane. Rounded bars are tasks; diamonds are milestones. Baseline marks show the original plan and progress overlays show completion. The axis uses the report locale for date formatting.

Milestones share task rows when their date is at or near a task endpoint. A marker is never deliberately placed in the middle of a task bar; when no shared row is safe, it uses the separate marker space above the tasks. Milestone labels search safe whitespace beside, above or below the marker at compact intervals, evaluate all collision-free orientations, and prefer a complete label over an earlier shortened alternative. If every adjacent position is blocked, a bounded fallback can move the label slightly farther away and extend its leader line. Labels may still shorten progressively when that is the best safe result. The tooltip retains the complete name and date. Labels avoid task bars, other milestone labels, the legend and other milestone markers; lower-priority labels may be suppressed when no collision-free position is available.

Overlapping tasks are packed into rows. Task names use the available in-bar width; when Show task dates is enabled, the date range appears on a compact second row without parentheses so it no longer consumes the task-name line. If the lane cannot hold all packed rows, a visible +N hidden message reports the omitted tasks. Double-click the swimlane label to focus that lane and expand it to the available height; double-click again to restore all lanes. Increasing Minimum lane height or filtering the report are also available.

Swimlane Height and Vertical Navigation

Every swimlane uses the same height. The visual first distributes equal-height lanes across the available page. When the combined lanes exceed the visual viewport at the configured Minimum lane height, a native vertical scrollbar appears automatically; reducing the number of lanes or lowering the minimum removes it. When scrolling is active, use the scrollbar, mouse wheel or keyboard to reach additional lanes. Use Ctrl+wheel or the navigation buttons for timeline zoom.

Design source data so swimlanes contain roughly comparable numbers of tasks at the report's chosen level of detail. Balanced lanes make the shared Minimum lane height easier to tune and produce clearer comparisons, editing and screenshots. A very dense outlier is usually better handled through filtering, focused-lane view or a separate detail page. Per-swimlane custom heights are intentionally not supported because uneven lanes make report authoring, cross-lane comparison and dependency routing less predictable.

Vertical scrolling exposes additional swimlanes but does not create extra rows inside an individual lane. If overlapping tasks still exceed that lane's row capacity, +N hidden remains visible and exact.

Navigation and Interaction

Dependencies

Dependency display modes are None, Selected item, Selected swimlane, Critical only, and All dependencies (audit). Selected item is the default for new visuals. Indirect-chain display follows up to four levels in each direction. Type/lag labels may be disabled when the view is dense.

Validation and Loading Status

Inspect the Power BI warning icon while authoring. It reports missing IDs, conflicting repeated IDs, invalid dates, unresolved or self-referencing dependencies, critical-dependency value/count errors, cycles, and data truncation.
